About the Association

Founded in 1974, the Association’s objective is to create and guarantee a waste management process for the region that is both economically and ecologically sound. To this end, the Upper Franconia Waste Disposal Association (known in German as the Zweckverband für Abfallwirtschaft in Nordwest-Oberfranken or ZAW for short) operates the Reception bunker with KOS 1070 in LIB version and foreign body trapwaste-to-energy plant in Coburg-Neuses, which thermally utilises the waste from over 260,000 residents, thereby generating electricity and district heating.

Application

The aim is to co-incinerate sewage sludge in the waste-to-energy plant. An existing silo and a reception bunker have been technically adapted for and integrated into the new pump lines.

Materials

Sewage sludge can contain large foreign bodies, up to 70 mm in diameter. The dry matter content is around 20 – 30%.

The System

In the receiving area, the existing reception bunker was equipped with a sliding frame that feeds the material into a single-shaft screw conveyor in a controlled manner.
Since it cannot flow, it must be fed into the KOS pump. Twin screw conveyors create a pre-pressure that allows the piston pump to be even better filled. This piston pump pumps the material into a storage silo. From this, too, material is fed via a sliding frame back to a double-shaft precompression screw conveyor which feeds another piston pump. From there, the material can be introduced into the incinerator in a controlled
manner.

Advantages compared to tipping waste into the waste bunker

■ Efficiency: Material can be supplied continuously and efficiently.
■ No unpleasant smells within the Putzmeister components, as it is a closed system.
■ Flexibility and accessibility: Sewage sludge can be transported over long distances and across difficult terrain. Unlike crane transport, the pump can convey the material through pipelines, hoses and other special equipment.
■ Controlled, steady material flow: Precise control of the material flow allows for efficient processing, since the waste is injected steadily into the waste shaft. This ensures optimum incineration of the sludge on the waste.

Special features

LIB – Low Inline Booster
■ Special version of the precompression screw conveyor.
■ Compact proportions: The LIB is a special design of the precompression screw conveyor. It is installed in a horizontal line upstream of the piston pump and is suitable for installation sites with a low ceiling height, for example.
■ Efficient pump output: Thanks to the easier front-feeding of the delivery cylinder, which avoids the need to divert the sludge, a higher fill level can be achieved. This is particularly beneficial with dry sludge.
■ Self-cleaning effect thanks to the double-shaft design.

Foreign body trap
■ Protects the plant: Large foreign bodies such as stones, metal parts or wood, are filtered out of the sewage sludge.
■ I ncreases occupational safety: Potentially dangerous situations can be prevented, such as blockages or obstructions that could lead to a build-up of pressure or cause the plant to be shut down.
■ Longer service life: By removing hazardous foreign bodies, the wear on all downstream components is reduced, which in turn increases the service life of the plant.
■ Efficient cleaning: The Putzmeister foreign body trap is fitted with a cleaning system that allows the plant to be thoroughly cleaned with ease. This saves both time and effort with regard to maintaining and servicing the system.
