World’s largest sewage sludge incineration plant in Tuen Mun, Hong Kong

2014 saw the commissioning of the huge sewage sludge incineration plant in Tuen Mun, Hong Kong.

The facility is able to process up to 2000 tons of sewage sludge daily, giving it twice the capacity of the previous wold‘s record holder – the Lippendorf power plant in Leipzig, Germany. Putzmeister has supplied the equipment for both of these plants. This system; supplied entirely by Putzmeister; takes care of receiving, conveying, mixing and metering – dependably for 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Furthermore, Putzmeister was responsible for every single aspect of this ambitious project, from planning the plant to delivering, assembling and commissioning it, right through to providing service and replacement parts.

In Hong Kong in 2010, over 800 tonnes of sewage sludge accrued every day across all waste water treatment plants – and this figure had almost doubled to 1500 tonnes per day by 2014

The plant
The overall plant is subdivided into two subsections, each of which can incinerate 1000 tonnes of sewage sludge every day. Each subsection contains three receiving bunkers, into which the trucks dump their sewage sludge deliveries.

The receiving area is equipped with an air extraction system to prevent odours from building up outside the plant. Once the trucks have made their deliveries, a fully automated process washes them before they leave the building.

The sludge is conveyed away from the receiving area by Putzmeister’s sliding frame technology. Screw conveyors then take it to a mixing screw, which mixes the primary and secondary sludge together.

The high-density solids pump installed underneath the mixing screw then pumps the sewage sludge into the incinerator via a delivery line and metering timing valves.

The combustion process uses a stationary fluidised bed, which releases its heat to two steam boilers per plant subsection. The steam generated here is turned into electric current in a turbine.
